Is Android really better than iOS?

Today in Open Source: Is Android better than iOS? Plus: How to run Linux on your Windows computer, and a Pennsylvania school district embraces open source solutions

Paul Stamatiou has switched from iOS to Android, and he has a compelling list of reasons why he thinks Android is better than iOS.

It was just meant to be a quick experiment. I started using a Nexus 4. I was going to go right back to my iPhone after a week. I was designing more and more Android interfaces at Twitter and realized I needed to more intimately grok Android UI paradigms.

A week in it started feeling normal; the larger form factor was no longer a nuisance. A month in I didn't miss anything about my iPhone. Two months in I sold my iPhone 5 and iPad Mini. It has now been three months since I made the switch. I'm loving Android.

More at PaulStamatiou.com

I generally hesitate to wade into the "this product is better than that" kind of discussion, for the simple reason that everybody's needs are different. If you read Paul's commentary (and it's worth a read), it's clear that Android is meeting his needs much more than iOS ever did.

Angry iOS and Android Fans
I'm sure Paul is going to catch some heat for his commentary from some of the Apple devotees out there. What he is saying amounts to heresy to some of those folks, but I give him credit for honestly stating his preference in mobile devices.

I think he'd be catching heat if he'd written it the other way around, and had switched from Android to iOS. Some Android fans are as equally passionate as their iOS counterparts for sure.

Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder
But beauty is in the eye of the beholder when it comes to mobile devices and ecosystems. My friend Kevin used to use an Android phone, but switched to IOS and he's never been happier. I've asked him why and his answer amounted to "it just works" and he's happy with that.

I have yet another friend though who switched from iOS to Android because he has large hands and needed a larger size screen on his phone. Patrick is able to shift easily between operating systems, and may yet move back to iOS if Apple ever releases an iPhone with a larger screen.

Choice is a Beautiful Thing: Android, iOS or Something Else
If the product you choose isn't meeting your needs, then it makes sense to switch as Kevin, Patrick and Paul did. That is why competition and market alternatives are so important. No two users are exactly alike, and no product is going to make everybody happy.

Choice is a beautiful thing, whether you choose iOS or Android or something else entirely.

Have you switched between iOS and Android? Or did you choose something else? Tell me why in the comments.

Android tablets still face major app gap with the iPad

Android tablets have been getting a lot more popular over the past year but they still face a major shortage of top-notch tablet-centric apps. Canalys has found that 30% of the top 50 free and paid iPad apps in the first half of 2013 were not available on Google Play while 18% were available but weren’t optimized for tablets. Taken all together, then, that means nearly half of the top iPad apps either aren’t available or aren’t optimized for Android tablets.

The issue seems to be that app developers simply haven’t seen a need to create tablet-centric Android apps because Android tablets have only really started taking off in the last year. Canalys expects that the app gap will shrink somewhat once Google improves the Google Play experience on tablets and once developers see that Android tablet owners have stronger engagement than they have in the past.

“To take the Play ecosystem to the next level, Google needs more than just a large addressable base of devices,” says Canalys analyst Tim Shepherd. “App developers need to see clear potential to build robust and sustainable business models around apps built for the platform, so increasing monetization potential must be a priority.”

Canalys’s press release follows below.

Half of top iPad apps either unavailable or not optimized on Android

30% of the top 50 free and paid iPad apps in the US are absent from Google Play

Palo Alto, Shanghai, Singapore and Reading – Wednesday, 14 August 2013 — New Canalys’ App Interrogator research highlights one of the deficiencies of the Android ecosystem: limited availability of high-quality, tablet-optimized apps in the Google Play store. Of the top 50 paid and free iPad apps in Apple’s US App Store, based on aggregated daily rankings in the first half of 2013, 30% were absent from Google Play. A further 18% were available, but not optimized for tablet users, offering no more than a smart phone app blown up to the size of a tablet screen.

Just 52% of apps had Android versions both available through Google Play and optimized (if only a little) for tablet use. ‘Quite simply, building high-quality app experiences for Android tablets has not been among many developers’ top priorities to date,’ said Canalys Senior Analyst Tim Shepherd. ‘That there are over 375,000 apps in the Apple App Store that are designed with iPad users in mind, versus just a fraction of this – in the low tens of thousands – available through Google Play, underscores this point.’

Canalys expects this to change as the addressable base of devices continues to soar and Google brings improvements to the Play store, but points out that Google needs to do more to encourage greater numbers of developers to invest in delivering high-quality Android tablet apps quickly, else it risks disappointing consumers with weak app experiences in the short term.

The 52% of top apps available through Google Play and optimized for tablets also includes six titles that appear as top paid titles on iOS, but are only available as free, ad-supported versions on Android. ‘While nominally free, set against a paid version of the app, ad-supported offerings typically deliver a poorer and often more limited user experience, sometimes taking a considerable toll on device battery life and often subjecting users to unskippable videos or other unpopular intrusions,’ said Canalys Analyst Daniel Matte.

It is important that Google wins consumers’ trust and encourages them to register credit cards and billing details, so that the barrier to them spending money on apps – and other content – is reduced at the point of purchase. ‘Improved consumer willingness to spend will increase developers’ monetization potential and options, and help to reduce their reliance on in-app ads, leading over time to an increase in app quality,’ said Matte.

It will also make the Android tablet opportunity more enticing for developers and increase the revenue potential of the Play store and ecosystem for Google. ‘To take the Play ecosystem to the next level, Google needs more than just a large addressable base of devices. App developers need to see clear potential to build robust and sustainable business models around apps built for the platform, so increasing monetization potential must be a priority,’ said Shepherd. ‘And for tablet apps in particular, Google should go further with changes to the Play store to ensure more rigorously managed, high-quality, optimized experiences are highlighted, to the benefit of consumers, and to reward those developers who invest the time and resources in building them with improved discoverability.’

Users Not Able to Comment or Like Some Posts on Facebook Page Walls

Facebook Pages began exhibiting a change
yesterday afternoon wherein posts made to a
Page’s wall directly or through tagging do not
show the option to comment. Page admins are
frustrated because they can’t respond to
comments, queries or accusations made to
their Page through tagged updates, and can
only remove the post. Also, users who Like a
Page can’t comment on posts made to the
Page’s wall by others who Like it. However,
posts made by the Page itself which show up
on its own wall are unaffected.
Update from Facebook: “This is a known bug
that is only affecting some Pages. The team is
actively working on fixing it.”

Facebook has recently been tweaking the status
update tagging tool, displaying a suggested
match tagging dropdown when a user
capitalizes a word matching the name of one
of their friends or Likes. Facebook also
changed the color of status update tag
backgrounds. This issue could be related to
these changes, or the slow rollout of the new
publisher. We’ll return with any additional
information and Facebook’s response as soon
as possible.
Matt Holliday contributed to this article
And thanks to BrandGlue for sending this in.
Update: The bug has since been fixed.
Comments made directly to Page walls during
the breakage period between the evenings of
September 2nd and 3rd still exhibit the issue
and do not show Like or comment buttons.
Posts from the breakage period appearing on a
Page’s wall because they were tagged now
correctly link to the full post showing Like and
comment buttons. All posts made after the
evening of September 3rd when the bug was
fixed are unaffected.

What is new at Facebook ? Facebook users can now attach photos to comments

Facebook users can now attach photos to comments

Facebook Coment Image

"The social network quietly launched a new feature Wednesday that lets users attach a photo when commenting on status updates. The tool appears to enable JPEG and PNG image files to be uploaded and inserted. Although animated GIFs can be uploaded, they'll display like a still image. Although not a direct stab at Twitter, the feature will give users an easy way to crowd-source images – something Twitter users have been able to do for a while. Facebook also introduced hashtags, another popular feature for Twitter users. And on Thursday, Facebook will hold an event at which it will reportedly bring video-sharing to the photo-sharing app Instagram. Vine, a video-sharing mobile application owned by Twitter, has rocketed to popularity since launching in January. On Wednesday, Twitter acquired Spindle, an iPhone app that enables users to see status updates from businesses near their current location."

Facebook comment threads are apparently a bit too calm, so the social network company's decided to mix things up with the addition of in-line image embeds starting today. But wait -- put down the link to your hottest GIF -- apparently the service only supports static images for now. And not everyone has it thus far, with the service only rolling out to folks who have a camera icon appear in the comment response field.
The functionality is rolling out on both web and mobile versions of Facebook; product engineer Bob Baldwin debuted the addition on his Facebook profile, where he said he built the image embedding "at a hackathon" with a gaggle of other FBers. Let us know in the comments below if you've already got it, and leave some pictures on the technology Facebook page!

What happens when I block someone?

When you block people on WhatsApp, you will no longer receive WhatsApp messages from them.
In more detail, here is what happens when you block someone:
  • WhatsApp messages sent by a blocked contact will not show up on your phone and will never be delivered to you. Learn how to block/unblock a contact on: Android | BlackBerry | iPhone | Nokia | Windows Phone
  • Your "last seen at..." and "online" information will no longer be visible to contacts you have blocked. More details about "last seen at..." and "online" can be found here .

However, there are two important features blocking does NOT change:
  • Your status message will still be visible to all WhatsApp contacts that have your number, including contacts you have blocked. Learn more about the status message feature here .
  • Blocking someone will not remove this contact from your WhatsApp list, nor will it remove you from the list on this contact's phone. To delete a contact in WhatsApp, you must delete the contact from your phone's address book.
If you are concerned whether a blocked contact will know if you are blocking them, please see this article.

Latest Technology Of Sony Xperia Android phones with PS3 DualShock3

We have some excellent news for fans of Sony Xperia smartphones now, as some of the latest models are set to be equipped with one exciting feature that may just tempt you into a purchase. Handsets like the Sony Xperia SP come with the ability to wirelessly hook up a PS3 DualShock3 controller for that tighter degree of control when playing your favorite Android games and Certified PlayStation Mobile apps.

Sony has been touting the benefits of its acquisition of the Sony Ericsson partnership since the announcement, and we're finally starting to see features from the more exciting part of the Sony business (such as the gaming bits) slipping into the handsets.

Since Sony has now taken over Sony Ericsson full time, it now paves the way for exciting PlayStation functionality to really become a big addition to Sony’s smartphone portfolio. You may have already heard whispers on DualShock functionality within Xperia phones, but this is probably the first time you have seen it demonstrated on video.
The beauty of it, is the fact that it is very simple to do and doesn’t require any custom software, rooting or additional software downloads. The Sony Xperia SP will soon be rolling out to many global markets and if you have a PS3, this DualShock3 pairing feature will be available straight out of the box.

The Sony Xperia SP comes loaded with a feature that lets you connect and pair a PS3 DualShock 3 controller with the handset without the need for rooting or installing additional software. All you need to do is head to the Settings > Xperia menu, where you'll then see the ability to add a DualShock controller.

Once paired with a USB cable, your Xperia smartphone will then allow you to connect wirelessly via Bluetooth and you can even resume connection by switching on directly from the DualShock3 pad, similar to when you would turn on your PS3 for the first time. Supported games that you can see in the clip include Sonic the Hedgehog 4, Conduit HD, Alien Breed and many others.
It also looks like Android games such as GTA Vice City will work as well, which is obviously fantastic. Sony hasn’t said which other Xperia devices will have the functionality, but we imagine it will come to recent handsets like the Xperia Z in good time. Watch the impressive clip above and let us know what you think about it.

The next step would be to connect both devices together with a cable, which will then pair both the controller and smartphone together. After this is done, both gadgets will be connected by Bluetooth. To turn off the controller, you'll need to tap on the power off button in the same menu.
We're guessing this should be available to Sony Mobile's other handsets, such as the Xperia Z and ZL. The Z that we have on hand is lacking this option as it's running on an older firmware. We've contacted Sony for a comment.
